TRADER RIG: A trader needs to focus on keeping away from an enemy, and if engaged, getting away from them. Your goal is to get form port to port as quickly as possible, with as little trouble as you can get away with. To do this, you'll need fittings that focus on speed and stealth. Use items like Dark Wrapped Gear and Streamlined Hulls. And forget about cannon outfittings. You don't want to fight, and buying cannon upgrades is just a waste of money.
BOARDING RIG: Boarding rigs focus on approaching fast, slowing the enemy and decimating their crew, then pulling alongside to board and capture. These rigs should be used with fast, nimble ships that can outmaneuver their prey, while adding boarding increasers and crew multipliers. Use Grappling Cannons and Nimble Rigs to maneuver and ensure boarding success. You shouldn't need armor outfitting, as your goal is to get in close, board and fight hand-to-hand.
BROADSIDE RIG: A broadside rig is best suited for heavy, ship-to-ship combat. Often used in port contentions, broadside rigs are intended to lay down a lot of fire as quickly as possible. They can stand up to damage and have lots of sailors to call upon if boarding is necessary. Broadside rigs are best suited to combat ships that want to devastate everything in range by firing multiple broadsides as quickly, accurately, and with as much damage as possible. Upgrade your armor and your cannon's damage dealing abilities with items like Overloaded Cannons and Armored Planking.
